Bookish Questions - Get to Know Me
What are you currently reading:
This will literally change every few days, however at the time of this post I'm currently reading The Perfect Rom-Com by Melissa Ferguson I'm enjoying the bookish characters and that the main character is an author. I'm a sucker for picking these up. I've also read a few other books by Melissa Ferguson and will likely continue to pick up her books.
Do you prefer hardcovers, paperbacks, ebooks or audiobooks?
I'm a lover of books and will not shy away from any of the options. It depends on the book and the experience I'm having that determines which I prefer. Initially I'd say I prefer to read floppy paperbacks as long as they are not on the heavier side. My wrists don't enjoy the experience. Since I rely on the library for my reading material, I will opt for an ebook if it means that I can read an anticipated book sooner than later. Audiobooks are not my favorite since I tend to tune things out and they become background noise, though I have listened to a few over the years. Most recently I listened to the audiobook and followed along in a hardcover copy since the physical book kept me focused and less inclined to tune out the audio. At the halfway mark I found that the addition of the audio assisted me getting through the difficult subject matter quicker.
Do you judge a book by its cover?
1,000% YES. The cover can be what makes me pick up the book at the library and read the blurb to determine if the book sounds like something I'd read. Sadly I've been mislead countless times by the cover as well as the blub. I've learned that the blurb is not written by the author so unfortunately it is the marketing team trying to entice you to pickup the book. This is the reason I solely rely on reading books from the library. I would be incredibly frustrated to find out I spent hard earned money on a book that I couldn't get through. Pretty covers do not always mean a good story, but they are enticing to pick up!
Do you prefer standalones or series?
At one time I preferred standalones much more than series, and while I still enjoy them they are harder to find nowadays. For someone who has book hangovers and miss the world and characters when the book is finished series are nice to sink into. The issue I have with series is that my memory is a bit shoddy and the time between publishing can mean I forget what happened. Depending on the series though this isn't always a problem. When you have a series with an overarching plot, I'm likely to forget details if I don't take notes, and a lot of times I forget to take notes. What I'm really enjoying in the series arena is that there are series that take place in the same world, and the characters from previous installment make appearances, but the book revolves around new main characters. This has become my favorite way to cope with a book hangover. Best is when I discover a series that is already started and I can jump in with 2-3 books already out to read. Then I can binge the series and anxiously await the new publication knowing that the exact details are not necessary to enjoy the new installment since it will follow new characters.
How do you choose your next read - mood, recommendations, or TBR list?
I'm a mood reader all the way. I can have a stack of books that I've picked up from the library only to find none of them are appealing to me, but they had been when I picked them up. This happens often and I'm not mad at it. With a three week check out period I will likely come back to wanting to read what I picked up anyway when the mood comes back around. Years ago I would make a "list" of books I wanted to read but this rarely worked for me.
